Careful selection is important for ensuring comfort and efficient operation. Here's how to find the right unit for your needs.

Air conditioner couple

How's your old air conditioner? If your system is barely chugging along between repair calls, you're wasting energy and money. Maybe it's time to upgrade. These tips will help you get the right unit for your home.

Find the right contractor

It's important to find an experienced installer who does quality work. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations. Search ratings sites, such as Angie's List. The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) has a searchable directory of quality accredited contractors.

Get two or more estimates and contact your local Better Business Bureau for information about any past complaints or problems. Don't just take the lowest bid. Work with a qualified contractor who'll take the time to do the job right.

Consider the options

You have choices when it comes to cooling your home; a number of different air conditioning technologies are available.

  • Central air conditioning systems have been around for decades, but today's units are more efficient than older models and use more environmentally friendly refrigerants.

  • Air source heat pumps provide highly efficient (up to 300%) air conditioning and heating for year-round comfort.

  • Mini split heat pumps provide energy-efficient heating and cooling without ductwork. They are a good choice for additions or in any application where installing ductwork is a challenge.

  • Window air conditioners are another option for home additions or for older homes where conventional ductwork is not available.

Each type has advantages and disadvantages. When selecting a unit, consider the size and condition of your home, your local climate and your cooling needs.

No matter what type of system you choose, make sure it's ENERGY STAR®-certified. ENERGY STAR systems use less energy than standard units.

Get the right fit

Make sure your new system is sized to fit your cooling needs. Oversizing can increase installation costs and cause performance issues. Studies show that 33% to 50% of air conditioning systems don't work the way they should because they're oversized.

Your contractor should size your system according to Manual J, ACCA-approved sizing guidelines. By asking the right questions, you'll save money and improve your system's performance.

Keep a good thing going

Your new system is installed and ready to run. Maintain performance by having your system cleaned and inspected once a year by a qualified professional. Also, change filters regularly following manufacturer guidelines.

An air conditioning upgrade can really reduce your energy costs. With a little attention to detail, you can optimize savings and comfort.
