Don’t let spring storms catch you off guard. Follow these tips to stay safe and reduce damage this storm season.

House in rain

Springtime brings warmer weather and blooming flowers, but it also brings the potential for severe storms. With strong winds, heavy rain, hail and even tornadoes, it’s crucial to be prepared to ensure your safety and minimize property damage. Here are some do’s and don’ts to help you weather the storm this spring:

Do:

Secure your property

Secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, grills, lawn decorations and garden equipment to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles in high winds. Trim any trees or branches that could fall and damage your home. Additionally, check that windows and doors are properly secured and sealed.

Invest in a generator

A backup generator can keep essential appliances running during a power outage, such as refrigerators, medical devices and sump pumps. Choose a generator that suits your household needs, ensure proper installation and test it regularly to confirm it’s in good working order. Never run your generator in an enclosed space or indoors, especially near doors and windows.

Familiarize yourself with your insurance coverage

Review your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy to understand what is covered in case of storm damage. Check for wind, hail and flood damage coverage, as these events are common during spring storms. If necessary, update your coverage to fill any gaps and confirm you know how to start the claims process should damage occur.

Develop an emergency plan

Identify a safe space in your home where your household can gather during severe weather, such as a basement or an interior room without windows. Discuss the plan with your family, conduct practice drills and establish a communication strategy to keep everyone in contact if you become separated. For more tips and resources to help you create a comprehensive plan, visit www.ready.gov/plan.

Create an emergency kit

Prepare a storm emergency kit with essential supplies, including bottled water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries and copies of important documents. Store the kit in an easily accessible location and check it periodically and replace expired or used items.

Don’t:

Forget to inspect your roof and gutters

Regular maintenance can prevent costly damage. Inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles and clear your gutters to avoid water pooling or overflowing during heavy rains.

Ignore weather alerts

Pay close attention to forecasts and heed any watches or warnings. Sign up for local weather alerts and download a reliable app for updates. When severe weather is predicted, take immediate action to protect your household and property.

Rely solely on technology

While technology is helpful, power outages can render phones, apps and internet services unusable. Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio on hand for updates, and have important phone numbers written down in case your devices fail.

Neglect your sump pump

A functioning sump pump is crucial for preventing basement flooding. Test your pump regularly and consider installing a battery backup to keep it operating during power outages.

Preparing for spring storms is a responsibility every homeowner should take seriously. By following these do’s and don’ts, you can protect your property, ensure the safety of your loved ones and navigate the storm season with greater confidence.
